From: New Video - Year: 2008 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: January 20, 2009 - Features: Widescreen * I have to admit I really enjoy this series in a gleefully mindless kind of way, and even with its shortcomings I have to appreciate any program that regularly features stories on one of my favorite subjects: Bigfoot. This second season set of 20 episodes occasionally stretches the thematic "monster" concept a little (giant hogs, ghosts), but rarely fails to entertain. A little science and a little speculation equals cryptozoological fun for the armchair explorer. Amazon Compare
From: Paramount Home Video - Year: 1999 - Rated: R - Release Date: January 20, 2009 - Features: Anamorphic * Widescreen * Election pushes some awkward moral hot buttons, yet remains a smart adult comedy that draws high school the way I remember it. Reese Witherspoon shows herself the master of the angry, squinty expression, and her Tracy Flick character is one tightly wound fireball whose entire existence seems built around becoming student council president. The unraveling of poor Matthew Broderick is the fulcrum of the narrative, and his downward spiral is like waiting for a train wreck that we all know is coming. The years have done nothing to diminish the humor, and Election remains a vastly underrated comedy, even if this BD release has nothing new to offer in terms of extras. Highly recommended. From: IFC - Year: 2007 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: October 21, 2008 - Features: Anamorphic * Widescreen * DD 5.1 * - Recommended! Hou Hsiao Hsien’s Flight of the Red Balloon works as an homage to the 1956 classic short film, The Red Balloon. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work as a family drama, thanks to an underdeveloped story, and despite some wonderful acting. The DVD is a mixed bag, in that it features strong audio and video, but virtually nothing in the form of supplemental material. Amazon Compare
From: Image Entertainment - Year: 2007 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: October 14, 2008 - Features: Anamorphic * DD 5.1 * DTS * Extras! * - Recommended! A gripping movie arrives with an enthralling high definition presentation on Blu-ray. If this sort of thing is your cup of tea, by all means, this is well worth your time. Amazon Compare
From: Lionsgate/Hit Entertainment - Year: 2007 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: November 11, 2008 While not as sublime as Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep is just as likely to put a smile on your face. Unfortunately, his haphazard DVD offers the bare minimum. Amazon Compare
From: The Criterion Collection - Year: 1954 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: January 20, 2009 - Features: Anamorphic * Widescreen * Extras! * - Recommended! Madly overwrought, like all the best Sirk pictures are, the film is beautifully presented here and comes with a persuasive package of extras. Amazon Compare
From: DreamWorks - Year: 2008 - Rated: PG-13 - Release Date: December 27, 2008 - Features: Anamorphic * Widescreen * Extras! * - Recommended! Unjustly ignored at the box office, DreamWorks provides Ghost Town with a pleasing Blu-ray in terms of picture quality and content. Sure, the supplemental material is a little light, but it does offer one funny commentary track for Gervais fans. If you’re looking for a charming little comedy, you should definitely get this little gem on your radar. Amazon Compare
From: Anchor Bay Entertainment - Year: 2008 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: December 02, 2008 - Features: Anamorphic * Widescreen * A documentary that’s its own worst enemy, the Starz TV production, In the Gutter doesn’t take many risks in chronicling the history of gross-out cinema. We do get to revisit some of John Waters’ best works, but far too much time is spent on films like American Pie and Jackass: The Movie. Anchor Bay’s disc is rather disappointing as well, delivering average audio and video and absolutely nothing in the form of supplemental material. Amazon Compare
From: Image Entertainment - Year: 2007 - Rated: R - Release Date: December 30, 2008 - Features: Anamorphic * Widescreen * DD 5.1 * Extras! * - Recommended! I, for one, am hoping that we haven’t seen the last of Nick Broomfield as a documentary filmmaker, but if he’s going to focus on actor-driven films, Battle for Haditha is a sign of great things yet to come. This is the most moving, realistic, and shocking account of the Iraq War we’ve yet to see on film, and Image Entertainment brings it to DVD with a trifecta of great audio, video, and extra features.
