It is easy to remove COFFEE, TEA, FRUIT STAINS, RUST, GREASE, WAX, or if fabric was SCORCHED. Follow these easy instructions;COFFEE, TEA, FRUIT STAINS place stained tablecloth over sink, and pour boiling water over stain. Repeat if necessary.GREASE take granulated sugar and water, make paste, rub into stain, let set before washing.SCORCH dipped in borax and water, then let dry in sun. Will work if not to scorched. WAX use ice cubes to harden. Scrape off as much wax as you can, with a knife, making sure you don`t cut, or tear fabric. If fabric is washable, place over bowl or sink and pour boiling water on the wax. If not washable, put fabric between a few pieces of clean fabric, press with iron. RUST take lemon juice and salt and make paste. Put on fabric and set fabric in sun or hold over steam.
Caring For Antiques TextilesOld textiles need loving care. The idea that these vulnerable, delicate pieces have survived for centuries is extraordinary. Over the years, someone cared enough to treat them properly. Now it`s our turn. Each type of old textile should be cleaned in a different way, so it is always best to approach cleaning very cautiously and conservatively. Do not try to wash or dry clean anything valuable without first consulting a textile expert. The damage done to fragile textiles can be irreversible. Most all white cottons and linens can be gently hand washed in warm water with a neutral detergent. If you must use an alternative, use something gentle like Ivory Flakes. Never use chlorine bleach as a whitener because it weakens the fibers and hastens disintegration of the piece of fabric. Rinse with clear water several times. Do not wring the item out by twisting it. It could easily tear when wet. Lace or any delicate things should be put into a net bag fefore hand washing to support then properly. If the lace is very old or valuable, do not wash it yourself. After washing, each item should be dried flat on a white cotton towel. Never hang a wet piece of cloth to dry. The weight of the water, combined with gravity, may rip it. Never dry anything in the sun,, because sun is a bleaching agent, and the piece could fade.Never wash any colored textile for example, a sampler, quilt, or paisley shawl. In most cases, the colors may not be permanent and may run, ruining the piece beyond repair. Consult with an expert before submitting these itmes to any cleaning treatment. As for needlepoint pillows and upholstered pieces, in most cases you can clean them sufficiently by carefully vacuuming up surface dust with low powered, hand held vacuum cleaner. No carpet needs constant vacuuming. Using the small vacuum just on those sections that need attention will help prolong the life of the carpet. Large antiques carpets shoud be professionally cleaned and stored. I would seek the advice of a reputable dealer. If they do not handle cleaning themselves, they can certainly recommend a trustworthy service to you.The worst enemy of textiles is light. Sunlight breaks down organic fibers and dyes, fading and weakening them irrevocably. You can do certain things to protect your old fabrics. If they are framed, try to use ultraviolet proof Plexiglas. Draw drapes and shades when the room is not in use. Turn you rug once a year. Keep very precious textiles out of direct sunlight. When not in use or on display, textiles should be stored in a dark, well ventilated place. Temperatures should be fairly constant and humidity shoud be around 55 percent. Never store old textiles in damp basements or dry attics.Antique textiles should always be stored flat. Never on hangers. If at all possible, roll rather than fold them. Folding creates sharp creases and weakens that area of the textile. If a large piece, a quilt for example, cannot be rolled, take pieces of acid acid free tissue and stuff them inside the folds to prevent deep creasing. Once or twice a year, refold items that ahve been stored folded to prevent permanent creasing.Always use acid free tissue, tubes, and storage boxes when putting textiles away. Never use colored tissue or plastic bags. If you run out of acid free tissue, a clean white cotton or linen sheet can also be used for this purpose. Loosely roll each item, trying not to overcrowd. If a piece is damaged, you should consult a textile conservator immediately. The only safe kind of repair is one that is easily reversible and appropriate for the piece. A good rule of thumb is that it is always better to do too little than too much to antique textiles.Taken from Barbara Milo Ohrbach`s book titled Antiques At Home.
